Suitable Fabrics

This pattern works best with slightly heavier stretch knit fabric such as cotton jersey, ponte di roma, poly spandex, rib knits (or scuba, as long as the fabric has sufficient stretch).

Especially for the dress, I highly recommend a thicker and more tightly knit fabric within the 220-300g/m2 range. That will help you achieve a snatched bodycon effect.

Yardage

Betwen 1.1-2m (1.2-2.2yds) of knit fabric with 40-50% stretch

Seam Allowances

All seam allowances are included (0.7cm at seams, 1.5cm at hems)

Notions Needed

1m (1.1yds) of fold-over elastic (1.5 or 2cm width)

Sewing Tools

Scissors, needles, twin-needle (optional), thread, pins, trick marker or chalk. Overlocker is completely optional.

What You'll Learn

With this pattern, and thanks to the in-depth explanations in the instructions booklet, you will learn to master the following techniques:

  • all you need to know about working with knits (serger or regular sewing machine)
  • sewing a stable, elasticated bardot neckline
  • sewing side slits
  • adjusting fit and grading between sizes

I consider this project to suitable for Confident Beginners eager to learn how to work with stretch fabric. While those with a coverlock or coverstitch machine will find it especially smooth to navigate, beginners can easily sew this up it using a regular sewing machine with a zigzag stitch or twin needle.

The story behind this sewing pattern

This pattern is one of my personal staples — I’ve made countless tops and midi dresses from it over the years. The versions in more “snatching” fabrics, like a firm ponte or a heavier poly-spandex, are honestly the ones that give me the biggest confidence boost.

Bodycon styles usually tend to do the opposite for me, but something about the way this one hugs in the right places (without feeling tight or unforgiving) makes me feel really good in my skin. And of course… I’m an absolute sucker for a sultry Bardot neckline. It’s simple, a little glam, and... a little cheeky!
