Havana Halter Dress and Top Sewing Pattern

The Havana Halter Dress & Top Sewing Pattern is a simple yet stylish pattern for stretch fabrics. If you’re looking for a quick sew that can be completed in under 1 hour, or if you are on the market for a breezy summer dress or flattering sports top — this pattern is just what you need!

With four lengths to choose from — mini, midi, maxi, or a cropped top — you can create a version for any occasion. Go casual for everyday wear, breezy for the beach, sporty for the gym, or dress it up for a night out. The halter neckline can be finished with ties or sewn as a closed halter for a clean and modern look!

This pattern is perfect for beginners: it doesn’t require an overlocker, though if you do have one, you’ll breeze through the steps even faster. It works best with light- to medium-weight jersey knits such as cotton, bamboo, or viscose blends, as well as modal and athletic/functional jerseys.

This style has the following features:

  • Lined, fitted halter bodice with a flared skirt
  • 4 length options: mini, midi, maxi dress OR crop top
  • 2 neckline finishes: ties or closed halter

Upon purchase, you will receive an instant PDF download, including: the sewing pattern (available in layered A4, A0, US/Letter and Projector versions) and comprehensive written instructions including illustrations and video sewing lessons so you can get started with confidence!

About the Havana Pattern

Atlanta is the perfect all-rounder — it will become your new go-to sewing pattern for a classic top that works for any occasion. Whether you’re in the mood for a sporty cropped top, a classic layering piece, or a polished turtleneck, this pattern has you covered.

With up to 12 possible variations to choose from (and endless fabric possibilities!), this truly versatile pattern will help you sew whatever you’re in the mood for!

The Atlanta Top was designed as a close-fitting garment. But no worries: thanks to the stretch fabric, it will still be comfortable to wear.

This pattern can be made using your regular sewing machine but will also be perfect if you have an overlocker!

Sizing

This pattern is available in 13 sizes up to Waist Circumference 126cm (49″) and Hip Circumference 147cm (57″)
Check out the product pictures for the Sizing Chart and make sure to check out my Sizing Guide for some additional tips on how to chose the right size and ensure the best garment fit for your project.

Use your closest Bust measurement to determine the base size. You can always adjust the fit by grading between sizes if your measurements span across one or more sizes on the chart. This will, of course, be explained in detail in the sewing step-by-step!

This garment was designed and then graded based on a size D, with a height of 172cm (5’6″) and B/C Cup.

Difficulty Level
Confident Beginner

With this pattern, and thanks to the in-depth explanations in the instructions booklet, you will learn to master the following techniques:

  • all you need to know about working with knits (serger or regular sewing machine)
  • sewing a lined and/or reversible garment
  • hemming knits with a twin needle
  • adjusting fit and grading between sizes

I consider this project to suitable for Confident Beginners eager to learn how to work with stretch fabric. While those with a coverlock or coverstitch machine will find it especially smooth to navigate, beginners can easily sew this up it using a regular sewing machine with a zigzag stitch or twin needle.

Materials Required

Suitable Fabrics

This sewing pattern was conceived for stretch fabric with 40-50% stretch and full recovery.

Best suited fabric options include any type light to medium of jersey knits (either cotton, bamboo or viscose), modal, and/or athletic/functional jersey.

Fabric weight should not exceed 200-220g/m², especially if making dress versions as the weight of the skirt might drag the bodice down!
You can use this Stretch Percentage Gauge to help determine whether your fabric is right for this project.
