For the back, you can go with a cheeky coverage that shows just a hint of bum or lean into the fun with the extra-cheeky cutting lines, offering an almost bikini-style finish.

The built-in gusset lining is designed to stay hidden at the front (smooth and seam-free), with only a subtle glimpse at the back.

Suitable Fabrics

This pattern was designed for stretch knit fabrics with 3–5% elastane (and minimum 40%-50% stretch). It has been thoroughly tested with cotton jersey, rayon jersey, and nylon/spandex blends.

Yardage

Less than 0.5m stretch knit fabric — making this pattern perfect for any scraps you have lying around!

Seam Allowances

All seam allowances are included (7mm)

Notions Needed

  • 2-3m of picot elastic or lace trim
  • matching thread
  • jersey/stretch needle

Sewing Tools

Scissors, jersey needle, thread, pins, trick marker or chalk. Overlocker is completely optional.

What You'll Learn

With this pattern, and thanks to the in-depth explanations in the instructions booklet, you will learn to master the following techniques:

  • The essentials of underwear construction, and choosing the right fabric & notions
  • How to sew lined panties with picot or lace edge, or without edges (= seamless)
  • How to perfectly calibrate your sewing machine settings for sewing elastic

This is a beginner-friendly pattern, especially if you’re curious about sewing with stretch fabrics or making underwear for the first time.

About 95% of the construction can be done on a regular sewing machine. A serger is optional and only useful for two seams — and even those can easily be sewn on a standard machine.

Clear construction, forgiving fit, low fabric consumption, and lots of room to experiment — a great confidence builder.

The story behind this sewing pattern

Underwear has always been a bit of a touchy topic for me. I want it to be comfortable — really comfortable (no digging in, ever) — but I also want it to look nice. Playful. Not boring. Definitely not granny-panty territory.

For the longest time, I didn’t think sewing my own underwear was even an option. It felt too technical, too “RTW-only.” But one day, I tried recreating a pair I loved using a few scraps I had lying around… and it actually worked. It looked cute. It felt good. And that was the moment everything shifted.

If I could recreate a pair, why not design one exactly how I like it?

That’s how the Praia Cheeky Hipster Panties were born. A pattern shaped by my own preferences — comfort-first, never digging in, but still flattering and fun. And let’s be honest: being able to stop depending on $12-per-pair RTW underwear was a very nice bonus.

Now I sew a pair of Praias from every cute scrap I can find, and I always keep a little stash of lace or picot elastic on hand just in case inspiration strikes.
